Some thoughts:
-the group logo is too much in the upper left (redundant)
-I think we need a persistent publisher (messy like this)
-I would move the links for "invite" and "leave" to the "membership" portlet
-I would have the about be in the upper right
-I like the groups pop out nav but it is not obvious enough, maybe make it bigger or more prominent via spacing/color.
-the links for all/popular/stuff i like are too saturated, try removing the rounted rectangles and just doing a colored link. I think it is too distracting.

Paul's right about the group logo. Dump it from the main column and put the publisher there, Twitter style. Twitter's model is *the* model for publishers.
Twitter's planning to add their search to the right hand column. It will render results in the main column, no separate page. Very much like you had planned. I like this model.
